I’m Al Black, a bass player, musician & teacher based in Falmouth, Cornwall. I’ve been playing bass guitar for over 20 years and perform across a range of styles, specialising in jazz, funk & pop.

As a performing bassist, my priority is to maintain a consistent groove and appropriate feel across all genres, with a playing style rooted in supporting and elevating the musicians I perform with.

Alongside performing, I offer bass & music theory tuition, focused on helping students become confident & independent musicians, equipped with the skills they require to succeed on their musical journey. My teaching philosophy is rooted in empowerment: I aim to instil a sense of purpose and self-direction in every student, so they are not only equipped with an objectively applicable skillset, but also the confidence and motivation to grow independently through their own practice.

Previously, I’ve been fortunate to work as a specialist support worker, supporting children and young adults with autism and learning disabilities. If  you feel yourself, a child or family member would benefit from musical interaction with someone with experience working and communicating with neurodivergent individuals please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

In addition to teaching and playing, I organise and promote gigs and events throughout Cornwall. The local scene is full of incredibly talented musicians, and I feel fortunate to be able to play and collaborate with many of them. I’m committed to supporting live music and creating spaces for it to thrive.
